Benefits of Seasonal Foods

I love that you can find the most common fruits and veggies year long, but you’ll find that eating seasonally has its benefits.  Seasonal produce is fresher and contains more nutrients because it doesn’t have to travel long distances. Spring fruits and veggies can be sourced locally, which can also help out members of your community.

Since seasonal produce can be grown locally, it also means these fruits and veggies tend to be cheaper! Yay!  When produce is grown in special climates to provide us with year round yummies, they may have to ship the food across the country, or even across the ocean.  This adds to the cost of the food.

Spring Time Yums

On a personal level, I find seasonal produce to just taste RIGHT!  You know what I mean? Digging into a pumpkin pie at the end of April just wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying as a bowl of strawberries.  I also feel that eating seasonal food allows you to keep your meals interesting. It creates a natural diversity on your plate over the course of the year.

For a fresh Spring meal, throw together asparagus, peas, and pasta or quinoa.  Toss that with a light cream sauce and add some flavor with lemon zest and mint.  My aunt is a big fan of this and let me in on her secret to eating deliciously!

Honorary Mention: Freeze Dried Fruit

Freeze dried fruit is a great way to enjoy the taste of fresh produce year round.  I like to add it to my frostings, cake better, and macarons.  Sometimes it can be hard to find quality produce when you want it, even if it is in season.
