FREE Cupcake & Cake Baking Course for Beginners
I started Bakes & Blunders back in 2018 with the goal of sharing what I learned about baking with other enthusiastic home bakers. With all of these years of practice, I’ve learned a lot, so I’m putting everything I know about baking cakes and cupcakes into one cohesive FREE course.

This is your Cake Baking Course Homepage. Here, you’ll find the 4 main units in the course. Click the header to go to that post. You can read the description first to know what to expect in each unit.
Looking for More?
After the 4 units, you’ll find some related posts. These are topics that I feel are helpful and applicable to many home bakers, but may not be necessary for everyone. If you have any questions not covered in the main units, look there first. Finished the course and still have questions? Comment at the bottom of this page or shoot me an email (colleen@bakesandblunders.com).

This free cake baking course is designed to come after my free buttercream for beginners course. If you feel like you are already a pro at buttercream, you may be okay skipping it, but I suggest glancing over it first to make sure you don’t have any questions.
1. Ingredient Overview
Understanding common cake ingredients is essential to becoming a more confident baker. In this lesson, you’ll learn all about the ingredients you’ll come across in future recipes, where you can find them, and if there are any substitutions available.
There are two ingredients that I use in most of my cake recipes that are a bit unique, but they help me create incredibly soft, moist cakes and cupcakes.
2. Measuring Ingredients
Most American home bakers start their baking journey using volume measurements, but this could cause problems and inconsistencies when it comes to your final bakes. Learn the best way to measure ingredients for the best results.
Using weight measurements (either grams or ounces) will not only give you the best, most reliable bakes, but I’ve found that it is also much easier and less messy!

3. Cupcake & Cake Prep Checklist
There is actually quite a bit you need to do before you start step one of any cupcake or cake recipe. Learn all about my five step process for preparing my pans, ingredients, and work space. This makes baking easier and less stressful.
Included in this unit, you’ll find my process for lining my cake pans and what I do to prevent shrunken cupcakes with soggy liners. This lesson also includes a video tutorial.
4. Cake Baking Basics
As you bake more and more, you’ll realize there’s not just one method for making amazing cakes and cupcakes from scratch. In fact, there’s quite a few!
Learn about the 4 cake making techniques that I use the most. For each method, you’ll learn about the general technique, pros and cons, and my favorite recipes that use each technique. This lesson also includes a video tutorial.
