Boba Craze
Boba has been pretty popular in the United States for quite a few years, but it wasn’t until 2021 that I finally got to try some myself. A classic boba flavor is black tea with milk and tapioca boba pearls with brown sugar syrup. The pearls are chewy and sweet and the milk tea is refreshing.
But if you’ve ever been to a boba shop, you know it doesn’t stop there. You will frequently see many, many drink choices ranging from different teas like matcha, chai, Thai, etc, fruity additions, and even different flavors of boba!
Boba Inspired Dessert Recipes
These boba inspired bakes have almost all come from the menu at my local shop. I’ve taken the flavor components and just had a bit of fun. Check ‘em out!
Milk Tea Cupcakes
This is one of my all time favorite cupcake recipes! The cupcake is made with a black tea infused evaporated milk and brown sugar to capture the flavors of a classic milk tea. I topped them with a brown sugar Swiss meringue buttercream and some boba pearls.
Brown sugar and black tea are the hero flavors in this boba inspired recipe and I am here for it. This is my take on a classic milk tea with boba.
Dirty Matcha Macarons
One of the best (and most indulgent) drinks I ever got from my local boba shop was the Dirty Matcha. It featured matcha milk, sweetened condensed milk, caramel sauce, boba, and crushed Oreos. An odd combo, to be sure, but heavenly.
My take on this boba drink is this recipe for dirty matcha macarons. The matcha macaron shells are filled with a swirl of sweetened condensed milk buttercream and a dollop of caramel. Then I dipped the macs in white chocolate and topped them off with crushed Oreos.

Vietnamese Iced Coffee Macarons
Even if you haven’t had it with boba, you might be familiar with Vietnamese iced coffee. The most basic version of this drink is iced coffee and sweetened condensed milk.
These coffee macaron shells are dusted with espresso powder and filled with sweetened condensed milk buttercream. While the flavors may be a bit simple, they are rich and delicious.
Sweet Cinnamon Chai Biscotti
A good chai should showcase rich spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves. It should be rich, bold, and creamy, which makes chai a delicious choice for a boba drink!
In this biscotti recipe, sweet cinnamon bits and chai spices add a burst of flavor to the twice baked cookies. For the ultimate impact, dip one of these bad boys into hot chai.
Turmeric Latte Macarons
Turmeric lattes, aka golden milk, had their own special craze many years ago. Typically, milk is warmed up with a handful of spices, including turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and more. It was initially touted for the anti-inflammatory properties, but I just love it for the flavor.
I knew these turmeric latte macarons were a bit of an odd choice, but they ended up being a huge hit! The macaron shells are filled with two different buttercreams. One is flavored with malted milk, while the other gets a dose of all those good spices!
Frosted Ube Sugar Cookies
Ube, a purple yam, is a very popular flavor in boba shops. It’s very similar to vanilla, but with an earthy sweet potato vibe. More than anything, ube is known for its vibrant purple color.
This is my spin on the classic Lofthouse sugar cookies. The soft ube sugar cookies get topped with a vanilla buttercream and a good portion of pretty purple sprinkles.
Pandan Rice Krispie Treats
My local boba shop never had a pandan drink, but their menu featured pandan waffles. I never got to try them though because they would sell out almost immediately! Pandan is a flavor derived from tropical plants that also has a similar taste to vanilla.
I used my pandan flavoring to whip up a batch of rice krispie treats! Since I frequently see pandan desserts paired with coconut, I topped my treats with shredded coconut for even more flavor.
