French Toast with Kahlua Whipped Cream
I bet we all have that meal from our childhood that we always wanted our parents to make. That one food that meant it was a special day. Mine was French toast. I love all breakfast food, but my mom made the best French toast. Now it’s my turn to try her recipe, but this time I’m upgrading it to French Toast with Kahlua Whipped Cream.

French Toast with Kahlua Whipped Cream
Santa always comes to our house a little early because we spend the holidays in Pennsylvania. I always wanted my son to have that “Christmas Morning” experience in our own home. So the weekend before we travel, we have Santa make an early visit. And, because food is all I think about, I like to make a special breakfast.
If you’ve been reading Bakes & Blunders for awhile (thanks!!), you know my husband is not a fan of me trying to jazz everything up. This year I was able to make us both happy. My mom’s French toast is a classic breakfast. But I decided to jazz up my French toast with Kahlua whipped cream.
The Secret Ingredient
Now, French toast is not a complicated affair, so why the heck am I so passionate about my mom’s recipe? She has a secret ingredient that I never would have guessed. Pancake mix. Yep, I’m talkin’ Bisquick, or Kodiak Cakes, or whatever.
This makes the batter for the French toast a tiny bit lumpy. DON’T PANIC. It will cook beautifully and give the French toast an almost pancake like crust. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s good.

Best Bread for French Toast
My personal secret to amazing French toast is your bread choice. The best bread for French toast is a thick, hearty slice like brioche, Texas toast, or country white. Regular old sandwich bread will work in a pinch, but you want a thicker bread that can stand up to the egg dip. If you’re bread tastes good enough to enjoy plain, your French toast is guaranteed to be delicious.
Today I’m using brioche for my French toast with Kahlua whipped cream. It is a rich, flavorful bread on its own and I think it really makes this recipe. It also helps to use day old bread. Or you can just gently toast the slices in the oven first. This dries the bread out so that it can soak up more flavor.
French Toast Tips & Tricks
This recipe is very unique thanks to the added pancake mix. As I mentioned, your batter will be a bit lumpy, but that’s okay! The mix will cause the toast to puff up just a bit as they cook. Don’t press on them with your spatula. It will just make them puffier.
Low and slow is the key to perfect French toast. If you cook the slices too fast you’ll have a dark exterior and a soggy interior. Keep the heat on medium- low and it should take about 3-4 minutes to cook on each side. The first one is always going to come out wrong. Eat it and adjust the heat accordingly.

Kahlua Whipped Cream
I absolutely loved this Kahlua whipped cream. It’s so simple to make and adds so much flavor! You only need a tablespoon of Kahlua to get a ton of flavor, though I suppose you could add more if you wanted to taste the alcohol. Be careful though, this could add too much liquid to the whipped cream.
If you don’t drink alcohol or just can’t get a tiny bottle of Kahlua, I’ve got a great idea for you. Kahlua is a coffee liqueur, so why not just add a half teaspoon of instant espresso? Now, I haven’t tried this, but it sounds pretty amazing. Let me know if you give this a go!
Whipped Cream Tips & Tricks
You can sweeten whipped cream with either granulated or powdered sugar. I’ve used both and think they are both great. However, if I’ve got an open bag of powdered sugar, I prefer to use that because the cornstarch in it helps thicken the whipped cream. If you do use granulated sugar, make sure to use less.
If you’d like to prepare this in advance, check out my stabilized whipped cream from my Coconut Cream Pie. This will give you a firmer whipped cream that will last several days. Personally, I prefer a softer finish and only whip until soft- medium peaks. But you do you and whip your cream however you please!

How to Eat French Toast
With a fork. Heehee! No, there are sooooo many ways to enjoy French toast. My new favorite way is butter and a plop of this Kahlua whipped cream. There’s also the classic butter and maple syrup combo that my husband enjoyed this morning. What’s your favorite?
Here are a few more ideas for your French toast:
- Peanut butter syrup (equal parts peanut butter and maple syrup -> heat, stir and pour)
- Jam
- Butterscotch
- Chocolate ganache
- Fresh fruit and whipped cream

French Toast with Kahlua Whipped Cream
Ingredients
French Toast
- 6 eggs
- ¼ cup milk 2 oz
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- ½ tsp vanilla
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- ¾ cup pancake mix 3 oz
- Thick sliced bread
Kahlua Whipped Cream
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream 8 fl oz
- 1 Tbsp Kahlua
- 2 Tbsps powdered sugar sifted
Instructions
French Toast
- Optional step: toast the bread in the oven at 350℉ for 2 minutes per side. This will dry out the bread and help it absorb the egg mixture better.
- In a medium bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon.
- Sift in the pancake mix and beat on low until just combined. The mixture will be a bit lumpy.
- Pour the batter into a shallow dish. Place a slice of bread into the batter and let it sit for about 5-10 seconds. Flip, gently shaking off any excess, and let the other sides soak for 5- 10 seconds.
- Cook slices in a frying pan over medium- low heat for 3-4 minutes per side. Do not press the slices as they cook.
Kahlua Whipped Cream
- Place cream, Kahlua, and powdered sugar in a chilled bowl. Whip on low to combine, then bump the speed to medium. Continue to whip until thick and holds soft peaks. You can whip until slightly firmer, if you prefer. Just be careful not to over whip.
Notes
- Brioche or Texas toast make great French toast.
- You will get about 8- 10 slices out of this recipe. It depends on how much batter the slices soak up. A quick dip is all they need!
