What is the Throne of Glass Series About?
In this fantasy series, we meet Celaena Sardothien, a young assassin who is pulled from a prison mine to compete in a deadly competition. As the series continues, we learn all about this world rich with magic and culture.
Along the way, there are numerous memorable characters and exciting battles. I would recommend this book series to anyone who enjoys fantasy with magic, shape shifters, and fae. There’s a decent dose of romance thrown in, but it’s not the main focus of the story.
Book & Recipe Pairings
Each book in the Throne of Glass series is unique and wonderful. I’ve chosen specific recipes to pair with each book based on themes or specific references. Use this guide to bake your way through the series or to entertain a book club. But be warned! There is a risk of small spoilers ahead, though I’ve tried my best to be vague.
Assassin’s Blade + Mini Opera Cake
Start the series off with a collection of prequel novellas that introduce key players that will (eventually) become essential to the story. In one of these stories, we learn about Celaena’s high class tastes, including her appreciation of the opera. So why not enjoy a slice of opera cake with this book!
Throne of Glass + Chocolate Rosemary Cake
In Throne of Glass, we see our main character struggling with imprisonment. She longs for freedom and dreams of being free among the pine trees. These references to woods and pine, plus her fondness for chocolate, made me think of my chocolate rosemary cake.

Crown of Midnight + Nutella Cupcakes
Chocolate cake is frequently enjoyed throughout the series, and one specific example is the chocolate hazelnut cake Celaena shares with Chaol for his birthday. Instead of a full on cake, we’re making Nutella cupcakes!
Heir of Fire + 4 Yolk Challah
This book serves as a turning point in the series. A large chunk of the novel is spent in a fae fortress where our main gal is training and going through a tough time. During this period, she is placed on kitchen duty. They make soft, fresh bread every day, so I had to go with my 4 yolk challah.
Queen of Shadows + Blueberry Tarts
When Lysandra stops by Aelin’s apartment with Evangeline in tow, the scene is charged with emotion. Despite this tense setting, Aelin kindly offers the young girl a blueberry tart. This was such a specific mention, and a wonderful scene, I had to create my own blueberry tart!
Empire of Storms + Blackberry Frangipane Tarts
As a child, Aelin enjoyed eating blackberry tarts in Terrasen, so I decided to create a blackberry tart for her. I wanted to keep the recipe simple, blackberry forward, and fit for royalty. A touch of gold leaf on the fresh berries tied it all together.
Tower of Dawn + Honey & Mint Sandwich Cookies
Highly divisive, I think Tower of Dawn was one of my favorite books in the series. Chaol is in a new country on a mission to find aid, and to heal. Yrene, his reluctant healer frequently drinks cool mint tea with honey. Enjoy these flavors as mint and honey sandwich cookies!

Kingdom of Ash + Chocolate Caramel Macarons
We’ve come to the grand finale and I need you to buckle up for a bit of pain. It’s been a long, rough ride, but you’ve almost made it to the satisfying end. Aelin loves chocolate and you’ll be wanting some emotional comfort foods, so I recommend a batch of chocolate caramel macarons. It’s hard to cry too much while you’re eating these.
